Zeolitization of Diatomite Residues by a Simple Method

The possibility of transforming a diatomite-rich waste from the brewing industry into synthetic zeolites has been investigated. After precalcination at 550 °C to eliminate retained organic matter, clean diatomite (Dt; with Si/Al molar ratio 17.4), was hydrothermally treated for 24 h continuous stirring in 3M NaOH solution 80 °C. results mineralogical characterization by X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement have shown crystallization 55% zeolite P, which neoformed amorphous phase, opal-CT and quartz starting sample. spectra obtained Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry corroborated such zeolitization. N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms that zeolitized material (Dt-Z) is mesoporous, almost 60% more specific surface area than Dt (62.6 m2/g vs. 39.4 m2/g), greater microporosity 40% smaller average pore size (71 Å 118 Å). This study first approximation know potential wastes as precursors, additional research including an aluminum source will be required.
